Case Study: Helping Children to Feel Empowered in Self-Isolation

Case Study: Helping Children to Feel Empowered in Self-Isolation

After some time in self-isolation with two school age children, our First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand® registered practitioner Stephanie Young sent in a case study of her elder son, to share with the many others who have found themselves in unforeseen lockdown. Both Stephanie and Theo have given us their permission to share this case study and photos with you. We hope that you will find this case study valuable to you personally and in your work with others.

Case Study:

Theo is an 11 year old boy. Very healthy and active. He has just started Intermediate school and has been catching the train to and from school with friends. He has started making new friendships and has been settling in well, enjoying the new freedoms and responsibilities he is growing into.

Theo plays in multiple sports teams, has practices or games each day and connects with friends through online games and group chats. He is very competitive and serious about sports and gaming.

Theo is experiencing very sudden restrictions in his life. He is at home due to circumstances beyond his control while his friends were still at school. One by one all sports practices, games and a weekend football tournament cancelled. Prize-giving for Summer Sports have been cancelled and school camp is cancelled. Theo is unable to see his best friend who has just arrived into the country due to their family being in self-quarantine. He feels a loss of purpose and says he is feeling like he doesn’t want to be alive anymore if life is like this.

He is prone to angry outbursts, reports being bored and frustrated, and sometimes tired and sad. He is fighting a lot with his younger brother and displays a lack of patience or understanding towards others.

Theo has an intellectual understanding of what is going on and that it is a collective experience. He has set school-work to complete, he is playing sport with the family each day and has remote contact with friends each day. But he is highly reactive to each disappointment.

Theo’s keynote essence or ‘power flower’ is First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand® No 13 Kanuka and his life path essence is First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand® No 76 Native Hawthorn. Theo was born on Thursday which corresponds to the First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand® No 46 Totara tree essence and the solar plexus chakra.

First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand® Registered Practitioner, Stephanie Young selecting a First Light Flower Essences of New Zealand® blend for her son:

What is your focus for Theo?

Stephanie:

My focus is to support his personality to respond in a more temperate manner to the sudden restrictions in his life. Treating his shock to the circumstances of his life changing so quickly and living in the midst of uncertainty.

I am focused on connecting his sense of purpose and connectedness with what he is doing to help his community by adhering to new restrictions.

I want him to know that this isn’t forever and there is plenty of great things in his life. His activities will resume again, and hopefully we will live a better life on the other side of this.
