Plant Profile: First Light® No 1 Pohutukawa – Initiative

First Light® No 1 Pohutukawa Deva’s Blessing

“I bring the gift of initiative – an inner vibrancy that permeates the being. Through me you experience the spark of life, the heartbeat and pulse of the land.”

Franchelle Ofsoské-Wyber

The iconic and much-loved Pōhutukawa needs little introduction. Known as New Zealand’s Christmas tree, Pōhutukawa is a coastal tree from the Myrtaceae family. Other members of this plant family include New Zealand native Red Rata, Eucalyptus and Myrtle trees.

Pōhutukawa trees grace coastlines throughout the North Island from Cape Reinga and north of New Plymouth and Gisborne. Pōhutukawa trees can live for hundreds of years and many old trees can be found in gardens, parks and precariously growing on rugged cliffs and coastal rock faces. They produce magnificently vibrant and brightly coloured bursts of red flowers in early summer.

At Cape Reinga, the northern most tip of New Zealand, there is a gnarled and twisted Pōhutukawa growing on the cliff top. This ancient Pōhutukawa is deeply revered and known as ‘the place of leaping’. It is said that from here, the spirits of the dead begin their journey back to Hawaiiki, their spiritual homeland, by leaping off the headland and climbing down the roots of the tree into the underworld to return home.
