The Graceful Rock Lily

Rengarenga Lily

Rengarenga Lily, known also by the alternative Maori name Maikaika or New Zealand Rock Lily, has come into its own recently as a popular and useful plant for ground-cover and thrives in most soils in either sun or shade. It is an attractive ornamental plant and in spring to mid-summer the plant produces a graceful display of white star-shaped flowers from its tall flower stalk.

This versatile plant is believed to have once been cultivated by Maori in plantations and near their homes. The rhizomes were eaten after being cooked in a hangi earth oven and the leaves used as a poultice for abscesses and ulcers and the swelling of joints or limbs. Early British settlers were also interested in this plant and it was one of the first New Zealand plants to brought back to Great Britain.

One of Five Sacred Mauri

Rengarenga Lily is known as one of five sacred mauri of the Maori people. It appears as a metaphor for several whakatauki or proverbs and in the 19th century, the second Maori king – Tawhiao referred to Rengarenga Lily in his inspirational statement:

Maku ano hei hanga i toku nei whare, Ko nga poupou he mahoe he patete, Ko te tahuhu he hinau. Me whakatupu ki te hua o te rengarenga Me whakapakari ki te hua o te kawariki.
And I will build my house, and the pillars will be made of mahoe and patete, the ridgebeam of hinau. It shall grow and blossom like that of the rengarenga and be strong and flourish like the kawariki.

Tawhiao was a leader and a visionary and the use of the trees and plants in his statement were specially chosen for their mauri or life force in order to unite and empower the people broken by war at the time. Rengarenga represented the beneficial creative forces and the creative talents and abilities of the people to inspire, encourage and benefit all.
